Cost Savings with Valuetech

It can be very expensive to successfully file a patent application, as shown in the typical examples below. Valuetech provides an opportunity to save considerable amounts of money by offering fees with a minimal overhead portion. Depending on how much you use Valuetech in your patenting process, you may save up to $10,000 off a patent application.

Typical Cost of a Regular US Patent

In many cases people choose to file a patent in the US first due to the large market covered by such patents. Patent costs can vary significantly depending on the complexity of the invention. An individual inventor filing a patent himself, while usually not advisable, will spend far less than employing a patent agent. The cost of filing a patent is only part of the cost of actually getting the patent, some of the other costs being, for example, a publication fee and maintenance fees.

Fees payable to the US Patent Office are for individual inventors or a small entity. Large business entities must pay double these charges. Patent agent or patent lawyer costs are for a patent of average complexity. Costs are given in Canadian dollars.

Stage Patent Office Fee / CA$ Patent Agent Cost / CA$
Thorough Search 3000
Writing the Patent 10000
Preparing Drawings 600
Filing 600 300
Negotiating with Examiner 3000
Issue of Patent 800 100
Maintenance Fee 4000 300
TOTAL 5400 17500

Valuetech may help to identifyarguments to counter office actions you may receive from the Patent Office, during the examination and negotiation stage. These are then approved by a patent agent who will then represent you. Apart from the simplest of cases it is best to use a patent agent at this stage, although numerous applicants are successful in representing themselves. One strategy for keeping costs down is to appoint a patent agent and then do as much work as possible yourself or in conjunction with Valuetech, allowing the patent agent to add the finishing touches.

Another option is to file a provisional application. The small entity filing fee for this is about CA$115. This application can be converted to a regular, nonprovisional application within a year, and effectively helps delay some of the costs.

Typical Cost of a Regular Canadian Patent

If you are filing patent applications in more than one country for the same invention, you can often use the same text, with only minor modifications. You will generally need only pay one lot of writing fees. In Canada, you have the option of delaying the Examination Fee for up five years, which will help delay some of the other costs, but it will also delay granting of the patent. Costs are given in Canadian dollars.
