About us

Valuetech is a company of intellectual property experts with PhD level training in either the physical sciences or engineering, working with the support of US and Canadian patent agents. We are based in Vancouver BC, Canada, and have clients in several countries around the world, including the US, UK, Belgium, Netherlands and China. The company was founded in 2000 and serves the cost conscious high-tech community by providing an alternate both to having a full-time in-house employee and to relying entirely on an external patent agent. Our clients range from individual inventors with an entrepreneurial spirit, through small to medium companies with ongoing product introduction and expanding patent portfolios, to the well established Fortune 500.

Damien Loveland - IP Creation Expert

Bachelor's and Doctorate in Physics, University of Oxford

Damien has been involved with intellectual property since 2000, when he managed a diverse portfolio of patents for a start-up. Over the years he has worked for small and large companies, both local and international, as well as for individual inventors. He helps clients identify and define their inventions, and walks them through the process of filing patent applications. Areas he's familiar with include lighting, electronics, lasers, physics, engineering, cryogenics, alloys, optics and optical crystals, software-based systems, business methods – and there are probably a few more that could be listed. He is often invited to brainstorming sessions, where he contributes ideas that lead to further patent applications – so far he has assigned about 25 inventions to Valuetech's clients.

Carie Mager – Patent Specialist

Ph.D. in Materials Engineering, Drexel University, PA; B.S. cum laude in Ceramic Engineering, Clemson University, SC; Patent Academy, USPTO, VA

Carie is a former USPTO patent examiner, a role in which she excelled and held top performer status. This experience coupled with several years of scientific research makes her mind one of the best when it comes to patent searching, assessing prior art in detail, defining patentable subject matter and overcoming examiners' objections. She has technical experience in fields such as: materials, including ceramics, metals, composites, biomaterials and polymers; mechanical and chemical testing; chemistry; surface chemistry; microstructures; global positioning systems; location based services; alternate fuels; and surgical instruments and equipment. Carie's work is extremely thorough and consistently surpasses expectations.

John Flanagan – Independent US Patent Attorney

BA in Physics, Monmouth College; JD, Catholic University of America; MBA, Wright State University

John is a former patent examiner and has a wealth of experience as an agent – in fact over 40 years of it. He’s been a corporate patent attorney, a government patent attorney, a private practice attorney and now he works independently. Valuetech hires John at the discretion and direction of our clients to review patent specifications, draft claims and act as attorney of record before the US patent office. He has worked in technologies such as engineering, mechanics, electronics, computer-related equipment and components, crop harvesting machinery, instrumentation physics, industrial processes, nuclear power plant components, medical equipment, flight navigation equipment... the list goes on. As well as bringing valuable advice to the table, John always produces exceptional work.

Susan Tees – Independent Canadian & US Patent Agent

BSc in Microbiology, University of British Columbia

Susan has over 25 years of experience with patents. As well as academic laboratory work, she has held positions both as a manager and a director of intellectual property for pharmaceutical companies, and has also worked for a respected, downtown legal firm. Valuetech employs Susan at the discretion and direction of our clients to review patent specifications, draft claims and act as agent of record before the Canadian patent office and for PCT patent applications. She is capable in areas such as biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, green technology, mobile applications, computer implemented methods and mechanical devices. Susan is incredibly bright, highly communicative and a real pleasure to work with.

Valuetech's Associates

Valuetech employs several other independent intellectual property experts on an as-needed basis. Depending on the expertise required, we have access to Canadian, US and European patent agents, a former US patent examiner, PhD's in chemistry and biotechnical engineering and an IP portfolio manager.
